My trip to Kenya
My Christ the Servant family,
Today I wore my shuka, which is a robe worn by the Masai tribe. It makes me feel strong.
This past week I visited Grant Sine Public School and presented the same photo slide-show for them. One of the best parts of my adventure to Kenya was learning new things. Now I can share the things I've learned with others.
The children of Grant Sine raised $500 for the Buzz For Bonaventure fundraiser. I wanted to show them images of the children that benefited from their generous efforts. I taught the kids some Swahili (a language that unites the more than 40 tribes in Kenya). The question that I presented to the students was "Why are the children in the photos so happy?" I explained that the youth at St. Bonaventure do not have fancy clothes, large homes, lots of toys, and sometimes find themselves without enough food and water. My message to the Grant Sine audience was that the children had treasures that were priceless. They had several gifts that couldn't be bought in a store. The boys and girls have each other. They have friends, and take pride in being good friends to others. You do not need money to give a neighbor a SMILE, KIND WORDS, or FRIENDSHIP.
I reminded them about something that we all have...a HEART (as you can see in the photo of a young girl named Valentine, sewn onto her dress). A child raised their hand and told me that a heart means LOVE. We all have love to share, and it's what's INSIDE that really MATTERS.
I concluded that my two lessons for them were:
1. Care for others!
2. Love yourself!
It was so special for me to have the opportunity to look into their innocent eyes and tell them "You are ALL very SPECIAL people". It is unfortunately not said enough to our children.
In Kenya I learned the true meaning of having a HAPPY HEART.
Thanks to the overwhelmingly generous response from my community, especially at Christ the Servant, The Buzz For Bonaventure fundraiser earned over $10,000 for the students of St. Bonaventure. Enough money was raised to provide 3 more years worth of food for the kids. Words cannot express my gratitude, but in Swahili, I will simply say "Asante". Thank you!
